You have served your time, Chris. I am so happy you have realized this. Let go of the guilt and blame, because they no longer serve you. The future beckons brightly, my friend. Sending peace and love.

Tender and chilling at once, Chris. You are a strong writer and clear thinker, and so brave in your actions and choices and insights. Thank you.

thank you Joyce. i respect and adore you as a writer and do not take your compliments lightly. my only question is whether any of my friends on this platform would still come over for dinner if i identified the menu included the Wellington.

Good question! :^)

As always, thank you for sharing this look into your mind as you parse what memories to leave behind and which to savor…I hope the methodical ritual of cooking, serving and speaking your grief helps transform it into something more…well, “palatable” is the wrong word, but I’m such a sucker for metaphor. Perhaps “manageable.”

Anyway, such good writing. As a nascent mushroom forager myself, I am impressed with your culinary prowess! M always cooks ours; we just scooped up the last of the chantrelles and are waiting for lion’s mane season to commence (those are the two easiest ones to identify around here 🍄‍🟫🧡🦁

I remember when the story came out about the lady poisoning her family. I believed her that it was an accident then; I haven’t read everything about her trial since, but I still do 🤷🏻‍♀️

"palatable" is a perfect metaphor. and thank you for taking the time to read my inner monologues. funny thing is that i have made this recipe in the past and while talking with a friend about what i was thinking about serving if they came to dinner, she laughed, expressing her hesitation about my entree, telling me the story about Patterson and the ill-fated dinner party. i was fascinated by the story, mostly because it is the exact opposite of how i view food --an expression of love and sustenance. several iterations of the narrative had very different endings; i settled on this because it was what i feel like i need at this point.
